The Boiled Cabbage Dinner takes me right back to my childhood. We would gather at my grandmother's house and enjoy this warm, comforting meal together. It's simple, humble food--but to us, it was always something special.
Ingredients
- 1 ham hock
- 6 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1 large onion, quartered
- 10 carrots, cut into chunks
- 1 head cabbage, chopped
- Butter, for serving
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- Vinegar for serving
Instructions
- In a large pot, add the ham hock, potatoes, onion, and carrots. Cover with water.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce heat and let simmer for 15-20 minutes, until vegetables begin to soften.
- Add the chopped cabbage to the pot.
- Continue simmering for another 20 minutes, or until all vegetables are tender.
- Remove ham hock, shred any meat, and return it to the pot if desired.
- Serve hot with butter, salt, pepper, and a splash of vinegar to taste.
